A II. világháború Zalaegerszeget sem kímélte, jóllehet, Zala székhelye a magyar városokat a háborús károkat felmérő kimutatás szerint a 27. helyen állt. Az egyik legsúlyosabb támadás a pályaudvart érte. 1945. március 27-én az állomásra lőszeres szerelvényt húztak be, ám az még este – egy légitámadás során – felrobbant. Nemcsak a vasútállomás épülete rongálódott meg, a robbantásban elpusztult a keszthelyi Balatoni-Állami Darnay-Múzeum, valamint a Székely Nemzeti Múzeum elmenekített, vagonokba rakott gyűjteményének egy jelentős része, amit éppen az állomáson keresztül akartak biztonságos helyre szállítani.

Der Zweite Weltkrieg verschonte auch Zalaegerszeg nicht, obwohl die Stadt bei der Abschätzung der Kriegsschäden auf der Liste der ungarischen Städte nur auf Platz 27 rangierte. Bei einem der schwersten Luftangriffe wurde eben der Bahnhof getroffen. Am 27. März 1945 stand ein Munitionszug auf dem Bahnhof, der aber noch am Abend desselben Tages, bei einem Luftangriff, explodierte. Nicht nur das Bahnhofsgebäude wurde beschädigt. Ein großer Teil der Sammlung des Staatlichen Darnay Museums in Keszthely sowie der Sammlung des Nationalen Szekler-Museums, die man an einen sicheren Ort bringen wollte, wurde zerstört.
World War II did not spare Zalaegerszeg: the seat of Zala county is ranked 27th in the list of Hungarian towns according to war damage. One of the most severe attacks was targeted on the railway station. On 27 March 1945, an ammunition train pulled in the station and exploded the same evening in an air raid. The detonation damaged not only the station building, but also destroyed a significant part of the collections of the Balaton – Darnay State Museum and the Székely National Museum that had been loaded into wagons to rescue them. These were being transported through the station to a place of safety.
