A Kálvária kápolna a Rózsák tere melletti kis dombon magasodik, messziről jelezve az arra haladóknak, hogy Zalaegerszeg múltjáról regél. 1751-ben már állt a kápolna, a szabók céhe építtette. Tornyának gúlasisakja gazdagon tagolt, hagymakupolás. Körülötte a város ódon temetője, melynek egyik legrégebbi sírjele Gothard János csizmadiamester – a Mindszenty téren álló Szentháromság szobor egykori gondviselője – homokkőből faragott síremléke. A kápolna előtt három, 18. századi szobor található: Máté evangélista, Krisztus a keresztfán és a Fájdalmas Szűz. A kerítésfal belső oldalán az 1930-as években készült reliefek mutatják be Jézus kálváriáját.

An old cemetery around the baroque chapel
Auf dem kleinen Hügel am Rosenplatz erhebt sich eine Kreuzwegkapelle, die den Besucher schon von weitem auf die Vergangenheit von Zalaegerszeg aufmerksam macht. Die Kapelle, die einst von der Schneiderzunft gestiftet wurde, stand bereits 1751 da. Der zierliche Turm ist mit einer reich gegliederten Zwiebelkuppel geschmückt. Um die Kapelle liegt der alte Friedhof der Stadt. Der älteste, noch erhaltene Grabstein im Friedhof wurde für den Stiefelmachermeister János Gothard in Sandstein gehauen, der einst für das Dreifaltigkeitsdenkmal auf dem Mindszenty Platz sorgte. Vor der Kapelle stehen drei Statuen aus dem 18. Jahrhundert: Evangelist Matthäus, Jesus Christus am Kreuz und die Schmerzhafte Jungfrau Maria. Auf der inneren Seite der Einfriedungsmauer sind auf Reliefs aus den 1930er Jahren die Stationen des Kreuzweges von Jesus Christus dargestellt.
The Kálvária kápolna (Calvary Chapel) can be seen on the little hill next to the Rózsák tere, attracting strollers’ attention that it has something to tell them about the history of Zalaegerszeg. The chapel already existed in 1751 and was built by the tailors’ guild. The pyramidal steeple of its tower is highly articulated, with an onion dome. It is surrounded by the ancient cemetery of the town (Kálvária temető – Calvary Cemetery), where one of the oldest gravestones is the sandstone tomb of JánosGothard bootmaker, the late caretaker of the Holy Trinity Statue in Mindszenty tér. In front of the chapel we can find three sculptures from the 18th century: of Evangelist Matthew, Christ on the cross and the Mourning Virgin. On the inner side of the brick fence reliefs made in the 1930s illustrate the Way of the Cross.
