Wandering in Zalaegerszeg’s past, this walk starts at Deák Square (5) the former city centre. From there, go on to view Sóház (Salt House) (7), the Deák Statue (8), the building of the Göcseji Museum (4) and the old Kummer House (9). Stroll to Mindszenty Square (10), look out for the Mary Magdalene Parish Church (6), opposite it you can see the first city hall building (11) (today a residential building with a café downstairs), the Statue of The Holy Trinity (12), and the statue of József Mindszenty, Prince Primate of Hungary (13) on the southern side of the parish church. Enjoy a pleasant walk to Piac (Market) Square (16) passing by the Mary Magdalene Clergy House (14) and Hotel Arany Bárány (15).

Your walking tour continues through the city’s downtown section. In Széchenyi Square (17) you will find the Zala County Archives (18) and the old Quarterhouse (19) with its courtyard. In Keresztury Square (20) there stands Dezső Keresztury’s likeness – a former minister born in our town who was both poet and scientist. Kossuth Square (21) is bordered by the Pontház (Point House) (22) building opposite the onion-domed Ispita (23), formerly an alms house and city hall. After you have quenched your thirst at the drinking fountain in Európa Square (24), you should admire the Dísz Square renewed in 2014 (25) and the Tulip Fountain, which is surrounded by the famous blocks of the Csipkeházak (Lace Houses) (26).

Continue your stroll in Kosztolányi Street. Don’t miss the Tower(-less) Clock (27), the Sándor Hevesi Theatre (28) and Griff Puppet Theatre (29), the County Hall (30), Béke (Peace) Park (31) and the row of villas (32). In Csány Square (33) and its neighbourhood you’ll find the neo-Roman style railway station (34), Dózsa Park (35), the Evangelical Church (36), the Reformed Church (37), the Rózsák tere (The Square of Roses) (38) and Calvary Chapel (39). After that, follow Ady Street here you can see the city’s Concert and Exhibition Hall (40) (former synagogue) and the birthplace of Miklós Gábor, the Zalaegerszeg born Kossuth award winning actor (41).

Detour towards the Ola district, taking in the Zrínyi Grammar School (42), old civil buildings and Jesus’ Heart Parish Church (43). The church can be visited for free upon prior appointment.
