Zalaegerszeg has had a special three-story ‘palace’ since 1924: several hundreds or thousands of people frequent it a day but no one actually inhabits it. Residents are rightly proud of the enormous old Art Nouveau post-office building, built to the design of Adolf Gusztáv Bernthaler, (6 Széchenyi tér), which, after repeated renovation is again awaiting visitors to its original grandeur. It deserves paying attention to the façade of the building which is decorated with Zsolnay ceramics (similarly to the Postal Palace in Pécs). When researching its history, we discovered an interesting titbit of its past: at the beginning of the 1930s the number of telephone service subscribers was near 300, which amounted to two per cent of the population at the time.
