The House of the Roman Catholic Congregation

We encounter a building with an eventful history at the corner of Kosztolányi utca and Petőfi utca, on the eastern side. The house constructed to the designs of József Metzner in 1914 was to serve the Catholic Association of Young Men and later the Catholic Congregation found a home in the building. In 1929 it was expanded with a stage when a gate was opened onto its western side (the main façade earlier faced Petőfi utca). Between 1945 and 1958 citizens visited this building for cinema shows. For a while it was referred to as the town’s House of Culture. On its ground floor, since 1962, a restaurant has been in operation. There used to be several shops upstairs however, we now can find the offices of the Roman Catholic Congregation in their place.
