Regional House of Traditional Crafts of Gébárt

A unique building attracts attention at the shores of Lake Gébárt. It may seem small at first glance, but as we enter through the door, it becomes clear: our eyes have quite deceived us, as a spacious common room and other rooms present an increased sense of space.

Additional workshops open from the courtyard, a woodworker, a fibre processing plant, a pottery and a traditional blacksmith shop. The Y-shaped house was built in 1982-83 on a small hill, so the lower level is underground, while the upper floor is actually the “ground floor”.

The Regional House of Traditional Crafts of Gébárt is the only folk handicraft “workshop home” in Hungary that is open all year round, but it also stands out from the point of view that it is one of the few buildings that were built specifically as a creative house. The decoration, carpets, furniture, utensils created by the actual builders of the house, the members of the Zala County Folk Art Association also serve as an evidence of the above. The love of the past and respect for traditions that has always been represented by the artisans are almost palpable in this special building. Tourists and visitors can almost instantly feel the hearts of the artists and the souls of the artworks.

Regional House of Traditional Crafts of Gébárt abounds in programs mainly for families with small children. It is no wonder that the Open Workshop Gallery program – which has been running monthly from autumn to spring since 2005 – has served as a model for other creative houses nationwide. The House of Traditional Crafts is also the seat of the National Association of Traditional Creative Houses
