Mindszenty primary school

It reaches high in the sky like a castle, this is how the convent built between 1927– 29 for the Notre Dame order (to the designs of István Csáky) (21 Zárda utca) was described. The old ONCSA residential estate offers a splendid view of the convent. The thick walls witnessed adventurous and troubled decades. During peacetime, an elementary school and a teachers’ training institute used to operate in the building then in 1948 it was nationalised and the sisters were replaced by new teachers (some of the teachers, as allegiant supporters of the government in control, tried to indoctrinate the graduating students, who had been educated by the nuns, by introducing atheist propaganda). The ‘castle’ was the home of a teachers’ training institute, a college and a grammar school in the following decades. The primary school founded in the 1990s was named after József Mindszenty, who played a central role in the establishment of the convent (József Mindszenty primary school, grammar school and students’ hostel). In 2000, this awe-inspiring building of imposing dimensions was returned to the order.
