Within the neighbourhood of the Kvártélyház, on Kossuth tér opening from Széchenyi tér, there stands a special residential building. It is special because it was built on the border of eras and of styles, and represents its unique genre singularly in the town, since this is the building which started and also ended the modern residential building construction in Zalaegerszeg in pre-socialist realism style after World War II. What does the name ‘Pontház’ (Point House) exactly mean? Already in the building’s blueprints a stand-alone so called point house took shape. This manner of creating blocks of buildings complied with the modern architectural principles of the time that discarded the former perimetric development method. Pontház – after several delays – had been completed by 28 October 1949 to the designs of József Schall. In a publication issued in 1965 it was referred to as the most beautiful modern building of the town.
