A gigantic tornado wreaked havoc in Zalaegerszeg on 18 July 1892. Although it lasted no longer than five minutes, it caused severe damage: the rock pillar of the Holy Trinity Statue, despite being fixed to the plinth by iron nails, was lifted from its height of 5-6 m and smashed to the ground crashing onto the parade in three pieces. The tornado scattered the roof of the houses leaving none intact but fortunately, no human life was demanded this time by wrathful nature the whimsical character of which was described by the newspaper titled Zalamegye (Zala County) as follows, “…it is a strange trick of fate that the thicker the tree, the crueller it dealt with it, and only the smaller and thinner ones escaped destruction.”
