We can find the Sports Arena of ZTE (Zalaegerszeg Football Club) at 16 Október 6. tér (built in 1972 and refurbished in 2002) in the place of which a vivid sports life already developed in the first part of the 20th century. In winter, ice skaters enjoyed this area. Heading in an easterly direction, after a few minutes’ walk, we arrive at the modern buildings of the Town Sports Hall (3 Stadion utca) and Zalaegerszeg Ice Rink (3a Stadion utca) – the former was inaugurated in 1980 while the latter in 2004. In the square in front of the hall we can find another statue by Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl, titled Íjász (Archer). Sport has always played a central part in the town’s life, which is rightly confirmed by ‘The Sports Town of the Nation’ award title which was conferred on Zalaegerszeg in 1996. Sixteen other towns were awarded a similar title between 1994 and 2003.
