The Kvártélyház has also been the scene of violent acts. The Imperial and Royal Chancellor (accompanied by several gendarmes and excisemen) was looking for the tax ledgers and in order to find them he was bold enough to have the archives stored in the building searched both on 8 June 1861 and 21 September. On the latter day, he marched to the Kvártélyház with no fewer than sixty gendarmes to find the documents. They attacked the door with chisels and truncheons, ravaged the flat of the chief cashier and the archives, rummaged through the files, searched everything from cellar to attic, yet the tax ledgers were not to be found. The incident was not without repercussions: the Zala County Assembly informed the country’s authority in a memorandum about the ‘unfathomable vandalism’ committed by the imperial authorities.
