A templom barokk építésű belső terének műkincsei közül kiemelkedik a kalandos történetű Piéta-szobor. A Fehérképi Madonnaként is ismert alkotás Zalaegerszeg legrégebbi barokk szobra, melyet festett volta ellenére kereszteltek el – nevét valószínűleg tartóoszlopának fehér színe miatt kapta.
A mai Csány tér környékén állították fel feltehetően 1784-ben, s miatta hívták a mai Kossuth Lajos utcát akkoriban Fehérképi utcának. A szobrot a XX. század első évtizedében helyezték át a templomkert kerítésébe, ahonnét az 1930-as években került a templom Szent István-oltárára.
Fehérkép Madonna, also known as the Pieta Statue
Among the artistic treasures of the church’s Baroque interior, the Pieta whose history is both rich and eventful, stands out in particular. Also known as the Fehérkép Madonna, it is the oldest Baroque sculpture in Zalaegerszeg. Despite having once been painted, it was given the name “Fehérkép,” most likely due to the white colour of its supporting column.
The statue was erected 1784 in the area of today’s Csány Square at about 1784, and for its sake the present-day Kossuth Lajos Street was once called Fehérkép Street. In the early 20th century it was relocated to the churchyard wall, and in the 1930s it was moved again to the church’s Saint Stephen Altar, where it remains today.
