Deák Square

Some of the buildings of the square emanate the atmosphere of a small civilian town at the end of the 19th century even at the dawn of the new millennium. On this site, stood the fortress of Egerszeg which in the past played a significant role in the fights against the Turks.

Today the baroque building of the Zalaegerszeg Court, which was erected to serve as County hall between 1730 and 1732, can be seen here. It gained a national reputation during the Hungarian Reform Era as a result of the activities of László Csány and Ferenc Deák. The square is graced with the statue of Zala born Ferenc Deák, “the wise man of the country” erected in 1879.
