The building known locally as Zóna was commissioned in the late 1880s by the merchant Benedek Fürst  or, according to other sources, by Bencze Fürst, a landowner and member of the Zala County Municipal Committee.

On the ground floor, Mór Grünwald opened a café in 1890, equipping it with a billiard table and naming it the National Café. By 1891, he was also operating a confectionery there.

In 1898, Jakab Klein took over the café, reopening it with great ceremony, accompanied by the local orchestra. In October 1905, Lajos Haas purchased the establishment. At the end of 1912, led by chairman Frigyes Schütz, the Association of Young Merchants set up their headquarters on the café’s upper floor. Later the venue passed to Lajos Molnár, and the upstairs rooms continued to serve as rental flats.

The nickname “Zóna” was coined by locals in reference to the small-portion meals once served here. During the socialist era, the building was nationalised; in the second half of the 20th century it operated as a restaurant and pub under the Zóna name until its final closure after 2002.

After its renovation, the building took on a new public function: in 2018 it became home to Zalaegerszeg’s second government office, and it now also houses the Department of Agricultural and Rural Development Support of the Government Office.
