The route was established in 2025 by the Municipality of Zalaegerszeg, a city with county rights. The circular walk can be started from three different points: the square created on the lakeshore in front of the Gébárt Regional House of Traditional Crafts, the car park of the AquaTherma Thermal Village and Camping (Tó Street); or the shared parking area of Aqua City Water Slide and Adventure Park and the Zalaegerszeg Thermal Bath (Fürdő Promenade).
At just over three and a half kilometres, the route is without level differences and can be completed at a comfortable pace in about an hour. The Students’ Trail passes almost every attraction of this lakeside “water paradise”, it is worth dedicating some time not only to marvel at the beautiful natural scenery but also to explore the sights along the way.
Panoramas, tradition, heritage, art, spiritual renewal, relaxation, and active leisure time all await visitors around Lake Gébárt. It is no wonder the area is known as a water paradise, offering a lakeside beach, aquapark, thermal bath, and even a dog-friendly shore. The Folk Craft House also named as the Folk Artisan Creative House has served the cause of folk art for over forty years. Its exhibitions include a true curiosity: Hungary’s only felt yurt evoking the era of the Hungarian Conquest, which visitors may not only admire but actually step inside.
A playful companion also joins us on our walk around Lake Gébárt: the “main character” of the Vidra Educational Trail narrates the area’s wildlife and the origins of the horseshoe-shaped lake through engaging information panels. For a touch of excitement, the seemingly adventurous, yet entirely safe floating bridges ensure a delightful crossing. Children can enjoy a fantastic playground on the lakeshore, while lovers of contemporary art can wander through the Sculpture Park nearby. Close to it, the Blessed Lady Chapel designed by the renowned architect Imre Makovecz welcomes the religious people.
Just like the Students’ Trail, visitors will find a variety of inviting hiking opportunities in other parts of the city as well.
In the Csács district of Zalaegerszeg, three scenic routes await nature enthusiasts. The Horhosok Trail leads through beautiful landscapes, following ridge lines, vineyards, and wooded ravines carved into the hillsides.
The Ferns’ Trail likewise welcomes hikers keen on exploring nature. By following any of its three routes, one may discover the enchanting scenery of Bozsoki Hill, Karácsony Hill, Öreg Hill, Fehér Hill, and Avas Hill.
Those who venture onto any of the Oaks’ Trail routes can delight in the wild, romantic, and picturesque corners of southern Zalaegerszeg, particularly the Alsóerdő forest.
